CBI brings back accused in rape case from UAE
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has brought back Midhun V V Chandran, an accused wanted by the Karnataka police in connection with a rape case. CBI coordinated with INTERPOL NCB - Abu Dhabi, Karnataka Police, Embassy of India, Abu Dhabi, Ministry of External Affairs for his return from UAE. A Red notice was issued by CBI against him on January 20, 2023. Through close coordination and follow-up, CBI has successfully returned 26 criminals wanted by Indian law enforcement agencies from abroad in 2023.

Indian-origin man sentenced for dangerous driving, abusing cop in Singapore
An Indian-origin man, K Pradeep Ram, was sentenced to 21 months and two weeks in prison and fined S$5,000 for dangerous driving and using threatening and abusive words towards a police officer in Singapore. Ram pleaded guilty to four charges, including dangerous driving causing grievous hurt. He breached Covid-19 protocols to drink with his friends and got into a fight with his friend Pravin. While under the influence of alcohol, Ram drove his lorry in a dangerous manner, causing Pravin to be dragged along the road and sustain multiple injuries.

UK's Family Visa crackdown to impact many Indian family plans
The UK government's latest set of visa crackdowns to cut immigration figures includes a major hike in the minimum salary threshold for British nationals and permanent residents applying to bring family members to join them in the UK, a move expected to impact several Indian families. The Family Visa category, under which long-term UK residents are able to bring their spouses and partners to join them, until now required the applicant to be earning at least GBP 18,600 annually.

Indian-origin novelist awarded Singapore's highest arts accolade
Meira Chand, an Indian-origin writer, was among the three Singaporeans awarded the Cultural Medallion, the city-state's top arts accolade. The award recognizes artistic excellence and contribution to enriching Singapore's arts and culture scene. Chand, along with novelist Suchen Christine Lim and Malay dance veteran Osman Abdul Hamid, received the award from President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. The Cultural Medallion comes with an SGD 80,000 grant for each recipient. Chand, of Swiss-Indian parentage, is the first English-language female writer to receive the award since 1997.

US President Biden nominates Indian American global venture capitalist to IDFC Board
President Joe Biden has nominated prominent Indian-American global venture capitalist Deven Parekh as a member of the Board of Directors of the International Development Finance Corporation, a development finance institution and agency of the US government. Parekh, the managing director at software investment firm Insight Partners, was nominated for the post last week. His nomination will be for a period of three years, the White House said in a press release on Friday. By statute, the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) Board of Directors includes four members recommended to the President from Senate and House leadership.

Police arrest ringleader of gang which robbed Indian Sikh family in Pakistan's Punjab province
The ringleader of robbers, Ahmad Raza, who disguised as security personnel and looted an Indian Sikh family in Gulberg, Lahore, has been arrested. The family was robbed of Rupees 250,000, PKR 150,000, and jewellery. Punjab caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi has demanded justice within 48 hours for this grave lapse in security. The Indian Sikhs arrived in Pakistan's Punjab province for Guru Nanak Dev's birth anniversary festivities and visited various gurdwaras during their stay.

UK: Indian student who went missing last month, found dead in river Thames, family launches fundraiser
An Indian student, Mitkumar Patel, who arrived in the UK for higher studies, was found dead in the river Thames near London. Indian student beaten, forced into labour for months in US; three charged
A 20-year-old Indian student, aspiring to study at Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, was rescued in Missouri after being held captive for months. The victim, whose name remains undisclosed, suffered from multiple bone fractures, lacerations, and injuries throughout his body. He was subjected to inhumane conditions, including being denied access to the bathroom and forced to work at three different homes. The suspects used various objects, such as electrical wire, PVC pipe, metal rods, wooden boards, and a water supply hose, to brutally beat him.

23-year-old student from Gujarat kills maternal grandparents and NRI uncle in New Jersey

Indian-origin healthcare unionist elected president of Singapore's largest labour group
Indian-origin healthcare unionist K Thanaletchimi has been appointed as president of the National Trades Union Congress in Singapore. Thanaletchimi takes over from Mary Liew and will serve a four-year term. She has served in various roles in the unions and was the driving force behind the merger of the National University Hospital Employees' Union and the Health Corporation of Singapore Staff Union. Thanaletchimi has been leading the Healthcare Services Employees' Union since 2011.

Indian doctoral student shot dead inside car in US
